Administration Joomla! 4.x • Configuring joomla server smtp settings - Is localhost safe?

I've been using joomla 4 for websites and have configured the mail settings to be
Mailer: SMTP
SMTP host: mail.domainname.com
Port: 465
Security: SSL/TLS
SMTP Authentication: Yes
SMTP Username: contactforms@domainname.com
SMTP Password: ************

which I thought was better than PHP Mail - and more secure.
Is that correct?

Then I noticed that one of the joomla accounts was set up to localhost

Mailer: SMTP
SMTP host: localhost
Port: 465
Security: SSL/TLS
SMTP Authentication: Yes
SMTP Username: [blank - no username]
SMTP Password: [blank - no username]

Is this just as secure as using a specific host/username/password?

If so, that is way easier than having to set up each of our clients with an email account/password that would be used just for all our contact forms.
