I'm not sure I understand your problems with the side bar menu. The menu is pretty much a list of links. The toggle button collapses and expands the entire side bar.
Joomla wouldn't have installed without the correct database - either MySQL 8.0.x or MariaDB 10.4.x for Joomla 5.
