Which version of Joomla did this website have before the update?
When you say you downloaded the update file and uploaded it, can you please clarify what you meant by 'uploaded'?
Joomla is normally updated by using the online update option or, as you say, downloading the update file and then clicking the button 'Upload and Update'in System - Update - Joomla
