FYI: I just installed J52 Release Candidate and went through the process of Registering as a new user and approval by the Superuser. It all seemed to work exactly as expected. The link in the email to the Super User gave me a Frontend login prompt and on successful confirmed activation of the account. These are the messages:
To New User:
Your account has been created and a verification link has been sent to the email address you entered. Note that you must verify the account by selecting the verification link when you get the email and then an administrator will activate your account before you can login.
Your email address has been verified. Once an administrator approves your account you will be notified by email and you can login to the site.
To Super User
The user's account has been activated and the user has been notified about it.
After site login, the default behaviour is to go to the User Profile page. So it looks like you don't have permission to access your own Profile page. Or going to that Event Submission page is interfering with the approval process.
I don't have a solution for you. You could try a separate (hidden?) login form that redirects to your profile page and see what that does. You can do it over and over if you have a separate email for your test user.
